[ cheers and applause ] >> cenk: there you have it the first presidential debate of 2012. i have a feeling we have mixed feelings about how that debate went. of course you have to keep in mind we'll be discussing tactics here. we know all of the policies and facts that go behind us. some of the viewers might be experiencing those policies in substance for the first time and they might have a different take. now on to the tactics and how it appears, vice president gore? >> al gore: i said before the debate that i thought that romney was going to be a better performer tonight, because he knows how far behind he is and he had to bring his a game and i think he did. i don't think it was the best debate performance for president obama. i agree with you we'll have to see how the specifics on the substantive issues settle in as people reflect on them. but the first visceral reaction i had was that romney did himself some good in this debate. i'm strongly supporting

wolf. >> kahnca candy, you heard step cutter take a swipe at jim lehrer. you know who the next moderator will be. that will be you. give me your impression, your sense of what happened tonight from a moderator's perspective. we saw the president got four extra minutes in the course of this debate over mitt romney. >> i think, you know, he's in the arena, there is -- and i salute anybody in there, both the candidates as well as the moderator. jim has been around a long time. i'm not sure about the minutes. in the end, this debate is brought to you by these candidates, and to me, it's better to hear from the candidates than to hear from the moderator. generally folks that felt their guy lost the debate might want more time or less. if you look back at other debates jim has done, he tries to engage candidates who are really unwilling to engage each other at time. the president wouldn't look at mitt romney, seemed to be this they didn't want to go and talk to each other and jim is one of those always very intent on trying to get the two of them to talk to one
